Very disappointing, need advice on FXST front wheel
Hi All
I finally had time to reroute my 1999 FXSTC front brake line. Well with closer inspection, the front brake disk is warped and the rim is rusted through the metal. The wheel looked OK when I bought the bike last month with some dust in the rim, or I thought was dust.
I need a new wheel, so I'm considering my options. The spindle looks good, what would a new rim and spokes cost. I am looking on craigslist for a used FXST front wheel but what would be a fair price? Should I consider an after market wheel on ebay?
And is the 1999 front wheel different from the 2000 like the rear wheel?
Thank for your thoughts.
My plan when I bought the bike was to replace the solid rear wheel with a spoke well. I guess that may be on hold now.
I'm running a 21" twin cam rim on my 1998 fxstc. Just have to have a 2000+ rotor. Watch the newer rotors some of them are just a bit larger in diameter.
Both 1999 and 2000 are 3/4" front axles hwoever if these wheels come with bearings pre installed the 1999 and earlier with a Tinken non selaed bearing and a bearing seal on them, and 2000-2006 come with 3/4" sealed front bearings. Realistically speaking a 2000-2006 FXST would fit with the axle spacers that come on a 2000-2006 FXST however the next thing to consider is if your bike has a mechanical speedo on the wheel or an electronic speedo.
If you have a mechanical speedo the hub on a 2000 and newer wheel will not have the notch for the speedo drive. If you have an electronic speedo on your bike (no speedo drive on the front wheel) it should not cause any problem, just get the axle spacers for 2000-2006 and the rotor and wheel.
The difference with the rotor is that the register on the hub for pre 2000 wheels is smaller (2") than the register on a 2000 and newer wheel which is 2.25 or so. You could also just bore out the center hole on the rotor you have now with a 2000 or newer wheel. I hope this helps and is not too confusing.

That is exactly what I need to know. I think the last year for the mechanical Speedo was 1995, so I'm good there. And my rotor is warped, so I need another one anyway. I'm hoping to find a wheel with the rotor, but I feel a lot better about my odds of finding one now.
