Default Another Swing arm bag mount thread

MachU
Jetfever, could you post more pics at different angles if you got them?, i'm liking this idea!

Here you go:
The bag has not touched down yet even though the left floor board has. If the bag does touch, Ill place a steel glide where it begins to wear, and other riders will be treated to a spark show:-)

The bag is not as close to the ground as it looks, but if I were to do it again, I would mount the bag an inch higher.

Mounting. The key to the mounting strength is that I included the rear axle in the mounting system. I cut a hole in the rear of the bag slightly undersize, and sanded to fit the axle nut tightly. This along with 3 bolts along the top and a single bolt at the bottom makes for a very robust mounting system.

I made a custom fit aluminum angle for the top bag mount. A 3rd hole was drilled in the angle after the photo.

This most aft top bolt is bag to aluminum angle only. The forward top 2 bolts go through the bag, the aluminum angle, and into the belt guard mounts, and keep the bag firmly located at the rear axle nut.

Aluminum angle is painted black now. I think you can see how I fabbed the angle to fit around the swing arm:

There is a 3rd hole at the aft end of the aluminum angle now.

the large round hole fits tightly over the axle bolt. If it leaks in the rain, I will split some vacuum hose and seal up the hole around the axle bolt.

bottom swing arm mount. I welded a washer to the standoff in order to keep the bag from twisting. The bag feels VERY strong/ tight. time will tell if it works but I sure like the capacity.

Default 3M or gaffers tape

I was planning on using some 3M clear tape to protect the swing arms, but I was out, so I used some Gaffers tape: It is easy to remove and does not leave a mess, but is not as permanent. Gaffers is a cotton tape.

Next time I go to Aircraft Spruce Ill pick up a small roll of 3M, or you can find it online, as well as gaffers tape.

There is no rubbing while operating, but the you could get dirt/ road gravel in between the bag and swing arms, and the vibration would cause paint damage. That is the reason for the tape. Not shown in my photos is blue tape to protect paint while fabbing / fitting the parts.

Edit, I just looked and unlike my 312XL swing arm bag, this bag has plenty of space between the swing arms and bag, due to the complex shape of the plastic back, and I really don't think I need to protect the swing arm.

More mounting info: I thought I linked this thread with photos of the coupling nuts I used, but I linked the wrong thread. If you want photos of the swing arm nuts, look here, post #25

Thanks! I am crazy about it. I got it and the matching chrome signals from a Forum member. Tail light came off his Street Bob. I chopped over 6" from the rear fender, (local Craigslist part) and there is a hidden reinforcement to keep the fender from cracking, A huge problem for Harley and one reason they stopped fitting these Donkey dick lights. Wiring was easy, just used 2 blanks at the stock plug, as if the Slim was set up for this lighting.
