Default Fatboy Forward Controls Discussion

Hey guys, quick question:

What's the best way to go about installing a set of forward controls yourself? As in, how difficult is it really? I know I'm going to get bent over if I have the dealer do it, so I'm looking to do it myself but am unsure of what the labor really consists of.

Also, what is needed exactly to switch over from floorboards to forwards? I know you obviously need the shift lever and the brake pedal units, but what else accompanies these? For reference I have a 2006 Fat boy.

Thank you
Zach

you generally buy after market forward control's a set, you can probably use your existing shift rod, but will most likely need a different rear brake line and kickstand.... the other option is you could buy FL Softail Forward Control Kit or use another softail's stock forward controls and be able to use your existing kickstand and brake line (as long as you dont get extended forward controls).

for after market ones you will need to remove your old ones (brackets, brake line, shifter...ect) bolt the new ones on (use loctite), connect new shifter to stock shift rod, install new kickstand, install new brake line, bleed new brake line...ect there is a procedure to follow if you have ABS in one of my old threads, i'll post it below

for stock forward controls you should be able to skip the kick stand, brake line & bleeding part. it will be more unbolt the old, re-bolt the new (everything will go back on similar to how it came off)

I put kurys on my old fxdl without any problems with basic tools. Everything I needed was in the kit. I didnt know much about loctite and used red. Needless to say, hopefully the new owner will love them for a long time.

Thanks for all the info man! I think im gonna take your suggestiion and seek out the softail forward control kit or another stock one and try to bolt her up. Seems the easiest route wiithout replacing things.

Your bike looks sick btw, thats deffinetly a direction i want to take my fatboy. How you changed up the rear end, slamming it and the chopped fender, in addition to them fatty bars...ive yet to see a better lookin softail on here...out****ingstanding brother!

thanks man!!!!! i really appreciate the positive feed back! crazy as it sounds my bikes stripped down and im doing a whole lot more for my 2nd phase of mods (not changing any of the last mods, just doing more), i'll be posting a thread once im done.

as far as the forward controls a i bought these used ones a couple months ago. there from a 2009 night train, but they should fit softails 2000 and up. but since i ending up needing to go with different style kick stand for other reasons and don't mind bleeding brakes, so i decided to buy a set of outlaw forward controls http://www.outlawcycleproducts.com/s.../outlaw-black/

here is what i got originally, and would most likely work for you (they shoudl fit any other 2000+ softails). So you you look for good deals on these parts below
  • Forward control bracket (shifter side) - Harley part # 33683-07A
  • Forward control bracket (brake side) - Harley part # 42508-08HP
  • Foot brake lever – Harley part # 42515-07
  • Shift lever - Harley part # 34564-90B
  • this is the other shift lever part - hd part number 33660-07. i didnt buy that because you should be able to use your current one, just might have to cut down the end that slides into the other shifter part if it sticks out too far.

or you could buy the FL Softail Forward Control Kit (you might be able to get a better deal searching online or ebay).

heres a pic of what i "was" going to use. i will most likely be selling them soon (as long as the outlaws work out, just have to install them first). if your interested let me know, other wise search the forums or ebay and buy them as a set or individually.

I subscribing to this for sure. I thought about forwards on my fat boy but I'm not to sure how they would feel long distance. And I'm taking 250 miles a day nothing to major. Love the look though.

they didn't seem that short to me, at least i never recall feeling uncomfortable or like my foot was falling / hanging off the pegs.

i could measure them for you if you want.
