Default New primary cover

I am replacing my primary cover with a wrinkle black cover for my 2013 slim.
What kind of oil do I replace the old with and do I definately need a new gasket. IF so what is a good source to get the oil and gasket from.

Just the next step to creating my black betty. It is an addiction.

I believe the MoCo recommends the same oil for primary as engine. Which is 20w50. As for the gasket get a coated metal gasket, I think James has them

I would replaced the gasket, for the cost it is not worth doing the job twice if it leaks. Get a James Gasket with the silicone bead or a Cometic gasket. For the oil, you can use whatever you are putting in your motor, or there are some primary specific fluids out there you can use...

Yep...swap the gasket with a new one. Not worth the risk of potential leaks and they don't cost that much. Anything wrong with your existing cover? Just was gonna suggest getting it powdercoated instead of buying a new one...way cheaper! Should be powdercoaters in your area. That's a real easy swap...just did mine.

Absolutely go powder.
MUCH cheaper, and you can specify whatever color/finish you want, plus they're DURABLE.

I remember pricing engine covers when I had mine done.
For black versions of the primary, clutch cover, cam cover and rockers was about $700 if I bought the H-D parts - closer to $1000 if I wanted chrome.

I had them all PC'd black for about $150.
After two years, they still don't have a single mark on any of them.

Why not, you're yanking the cover anyway, right?
Total turnaround time for me was two days from my local PC guy.

Where do I get the james gasket from. I did have some parts powder coated but I liked the wrinkle finish and I got the actual HD wrinkle finish cover on ebay for $67 as opposed to $239 from HD.

That's a really good deal for the black primary. You can get the gasket at the dealership. They sell the rubber gasket with the metal inside.

Just ordered a James gasket from J and P cycles. Gasket, Harley repair manual and new cover should all be arriving next week so it looks like I will be doing the swap next week end.
