Is there any benefit to installing a high flow oil pump on a 2001 cam plate. I know the pumps flow and scavenge better, but if the stock cam plate passages are restrictive, is flow and scavenging increased? Not really looking to replace cam plate at this time, but may have an issue with current pump, so considering options. Would really like to hear from anyone that has installed one on a stock plate. Did you get more misting from air filter? Thanks.
My plate is the SE updated one and have the hi-volume oil pump. The best thing about running the hi-volume pump is at idle the oil pressure is a decent amount higher than the stock oil pump at idle. I like knowing the top of the engine is getting good lubrication when at idle.
Doing a cam upgrade soon and thought I would change out the oil pump. Never seem to get more than 8 PSI @ 1000 RPM idle.
Prefer the Screamin' Eagle oil pump and plate. Kit is spendy, they want you to change tensioner types.
Plenty of info out there about the old tensioners. Nothing wrong with them really, just consider them a "wear" item.
Sifton are made these days in China, name is owned by V-Twin, I think.
Consider measuring the oil pump crank pinion runout before you spend your money.
If it is about .006" or more, you'd be wearing out your new oil pump fairly quickly.
Better is less than .003".
Your Road King is the earlier Timken bearing equipped engine, should be sweet and less than .003".

The later HD hi-flow oil pump is not compatible with an early model cam plate; early uses an o-ring at the pump/plate interface but later does not, metal to metal. However, Daytona offers a hi-flow pump for both early and late HD OEM cam plates. Available on Ebay for $125-$135.
The HD lubricating system is based on volume, not pressure. 8psi at idle and 30-32psi at cruise is plenty. The Baisley spring ($12) can increase idle and low rpm pressure. Tensioners can be replace with CYCO tensioner shoes. The early OEM cam plate is actually a robust piece of hardware and more than adequate for typical motor mods that make 100/100 numbers. Spend money on cams and/or head work instead.......

So, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Right?
I don't really think I have any issues with oil flow/delivery, just figured if I was already in there, I should just upgrade/replace stuff. The bike only has about 38K miles, so, I should be OK.
