Default changing tranny oil

Hey folks could use a little help out there! Want to change tranny oil on my 04 fatboy, there seems to be two locations where I can drain the fluid. The first option: A bolt with a female hex no O ring located on the tranny pan at the lowest portion. The second, there is a bolt just between the shocks located to the rear, a bolt with the O ring. Just wandering which location is the best to get the job done..

The drain plug for the trans. on a Softail is between the shocks. It is a combination 1/4" allen and 5/8" hex plug. Use a regular 5/8" socket to get it loose, and then use the allen wrench to take it out. On my wife's Heritage, you can't get the plug all the way out with the socket, because the socket hits left shock. You should loosen it with the socket however, to avoid stripping the Allen insert if the plug is too tight.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bill

Hey DJ, it is the bolt up between the shocks.. You will need an extension on a socket to get to it initially, then you can use an allen wrench to back it out once loose (can't recall the size of the socket or allen, but same as used on crankcase drain). I had the same question on my 05'. I hadn't even seen the bolt between the shocks until someone told me thats where it was. mb
