Can one upgrade their pipes ( V & H True Duals) without doing all the other downloads, dyno, etc? What can one expect by just changing pipes? Is anything else mandatory to ensure a smooth running bike? Thanks.
if yor bike is fuel injected, and your getting vance and hines pipes, you really should get the vance and hines fuel pak. if its carborated, just adjust it, orre-jet it
Regardless of whether you have a carb or fuel injection, a new exhaust will typically improve breathing, moving more air through the combustion chamber. In order to get some of the benefit, you should also put a better air cleaner (but don't go crazy as the heads in the motor are really air flow limited). With or without the breather, the exhaust moving more air will typically cause your bike to run lean. You should rejet your carb or remap your fuel injection.
I don't think if you are just doing stage 1 (pipes and breather) that you need to do the fuel pak - the remap on the fuel injection, particularly for popular pipes like the V&H, are typically very good.
If you were just doing pipes you'd probably be just fine with a Stage I flash of your ECU at the local dealer. If you were going to do pipes and an intake then it would be time to look for some sort of tuner, not limited to Harley's version.
Your bike will run lean if not adjusted, but I like the HARLEY SERT and have one installed and at 1000 mile service get a DYNO-TUNE the bike will run a LOT better!! GOOD LUCK. PURPLE HAZE.
