Default RE: Nacelle on deluxe

I've got the nacelle on my Fat Boy. Had it installed by the dealer.

You need the one for the softail FL front end. A true dresser front end is 1/4" or 1/2" wider for the added disc rotor so if you buy it from someone, be sure it fits the FLST front end.

Mounting is no big deal... take the old light and tin off and install the nacelle, light, and trim ring. It comes in left and right halves and screws to the triple trees from the side just like the existing tins. For your bike you're probably going to need to lower the light bar and remove the windscreen mounts. The tech may have had to cut and reattach the headlight plug but I'm not sure. Because he had to change out the risers, he just laid the bars over on the tank but didn't disconnect anything. Several different types of trim rings and "hoods" available so I suggest deciding on everything at once instead of having to take it apart more than once.

Problems:

If your bars have anything but the short risers, you'll have to get the nacelle style risers so the riser cover will fit over them. They were about 1/2" or more shorter so the bars move somewhat. An alternative is to not use the riser cover; in this case either HD or one of the aftermarket parts makers has a cover plate which fits between risers to cover the top of the triple trees. They were specifically designed for the nacelle/drag bars configuration but would work with anything. And while you're considering cover plates, take a look at the bottom triple tree cover plate that HD and others make; a nice finishig touch. Oh, I've also seen a nice spike looking trim cover for the joint down the center where the two nacelle halves meet. Works with some trim rings, not with others.

The windscreen. The headlight cutout is MUCH smaller for the normal headlight vs. the nacelle. I've been looking and think the difference is something like two inches total. I have talked to several folks about this because I want a windscreen for mine which has the small cutout and would need to cut out. There are several posts here about how to trim a windscreen; the process would basically work the same for enlarging a cutout. That said, they specifically make a nacelle type windscreen for FLST with or without light bars, and light bars like on your deluxe would make a difference. Another thing I've noticed is that a great number of windscreen tool bags will not fit if you have the nacelle.

So finally, I'm a bit biased but my advice is to go for it. The look is just awesome on the softail and would fit your design scheme for the deluxe really, really well. Wanna know what it would look like? Go to the HD website and do the customize thing. They have the ST on there now and you can pick your style bike, color, bars, etc. and add the nacelle to see how it all looks together. AND, it will tell you if there are any part conflicts. For reference, the nacelle is THE most commented thing I get when folks look at my bike.

Sonar_Chris,

I don't have the number (on the road now...)

I believe it comes with the "Softail-Nacelle-Kit." Just order the kit and you should be good to go.

Nikon,

This should answer your original question? (this is off of the Deluxe Pictures thread)

In reply to the Nacelle

It is the Harley one made for the Softail. You will have to make some changes to get the passing lights /windsheild to fit.

Also Harley recommends a hardware kit for 49.00. I didn't use any of it and it probably won't.

these comments are if you are putting it on a Deluxe, other FL Softails may be the same but I can't say.

I had to grind the top section of the passing lights about 1/4 inch for it to fit.

The windshield will need to be cut. They give you a templete in the kit, I haven't done that yet. (weather perfect in Charlotte)

It also looks like I will have to mess around with the detachable windshield mounting setup, it doesn't look like it will fit.

I DO NOT have the detachable windshield made for the Deluxe, it is Harley but I don't know which one (e-bayed)

Just some things to keep in mind.

Also if you have a trim ring on your headlight it will not fit, you will need to buy the one for the touring models

I may be willing to get involved in this mod but I need to know exactly what has to be done I really do not want any surprises. I was hoping to know exactly what has to be don one guy said grind the light bar then there is windshield problems to deal with looks like a few guys have had it done but by someone else. I called a dealer and they said it will not fit according to the book i told them a half a dozen guys on the forum have it done already sounds like this dealer is not with it

Just to confirm everything that was already said; The nacelle does fit with some minor modifications, are you installing it yourself? Harley says it wont fit, it does... the passing light bar is the only issue I came across. I didn't buy the extra install kit HD try's to sell with the nacelle, you will need some spacers/washers between the nacelle and forks. Your passing light bar needs to be modified, shave down both top and bottom spacers, about a quarter inch.
I didn't like look of the longer stock risers with my beach bars, but liked the look of the OG Deluxe top clamp so I had the risers cut down to 2" and re tapped. The stock windshield will no longer fit, I ended up getting a windvest, I know some have trimmed the OG shield for fit, let me know if you need any close up pictures.

I am suprised that the Nacelle kit is not recommended by HD because if anything the Nacelle completes the nostalgic look of the Deluxe. But it looks like people are making it fit. Don't forget, the trim rings are the finishing touch. Several to choose from.

Stock Fatboy risers work too, any short risers should. Riser cover comes with nacelle kit.
