I agree with Uncle G ..
that spring has to snap over the bolt.. sometimes I have to use my finger to raise up the spring to get it on right..
heres a vid on how to do it. notice he raised up the springs and pushes the shield back to lock it in place..

Sometimes the clutch cable or the handle bar adjustment is in the way of allowing them to snap back over the post, basically the shield isn't set all the way back and can't due to one of these items.
I can tell you in my case, my tall screen down't allow the spring to go back due to my apes (I don't want to pull them back) and I've never ever had a problem with the shield moving.
If it's not your handlebar angle or clutch cable interfering, I'd suggest you try pushing the shield down further onto the bottom mounts, often that's what needs to happen to get the top in the right position.

No way it can snap over the bold, the spring is too short. I checked 3 screens, all the same thing.
At any rate, the screen sits ok, all the way in the bolds. Rock solid.
I'm gonna remove the springs as they now only add weight and have no function!

if it is fully seated the loop should go over that bolt. I have had quite a few softails all with detachable shields. sometimes the lower hooks seem to be fully seated but are not. if you are comfortable with the way it is seated then you can take your chances, but in no way would I remove the springs. it isn't that much weight. it isn't going to change the performance of the bike. they are there for a reason. I would leave them

protect the headlight
I always put a towel on top of the headlight when fitting/ removing my windshield.
This Protects the black paint (or chrome) on the headlight. I am more likely to touch the headlight with the bottom curve of the 'shield when removing, as the top mount "breaks free" when puling forward.
How about a bit of grease on the rubber fork mounts to see if the 'shield mounts seat all the way a bit more easily? My spring clips fit over and lock the shield from moving forward to the remove position. (They work perfectly as designed).
