Default Noisy Engine 06 Deluxe

Just bought my new 06 Deluxe and love it. However the engine sounds very noisy...valves, lifters, cam, injectors all sound like they're ready to explode. I even get what sounds like a "rod knock" at times. Noises sound louder when engine is heated up. Seems to run very hot...to the point that the oil starts foaming in the oil reservior and bubble are on the dipstick when I check the level. In any event I took it in for my 1000 mi service and was told by the dealer that it's normal and they would recommend that I put in their synthetic oil, which I did. They claimed it would quiet the engine and allow it to run cooler. They also said that with the 3/4 windshield they put on, I would hear more noises. I heard them before the windshield. Not sure I've noticed much difference with the synthetic (put on 2-300 more miles), but I'm willing to give it time. I've owned 7 bikes over the years but this is my 1st Harley. Other than the engine noise and heat it's absolutely awesome.
Anyone have any input here? Thanks!!!!!!

I have had my deluxe for 1 month and 1600 miles. When I first got her while she was breakin in she seemed to get pretty hot. Especially the back jug under the seat. I had a RK prior and it didn't do that. Differnt set up though. I noticed that with the windshied on the motor seemed to make alot more noise just the wind flow decrease. Also with the stock exhaust she seemed alot louder in the motor. All my other bikes have had loud samson exhaust. Did my 1000 mile with synthetic and she doesn't get as hot under the seat but the weather has also cooled a bit. The air cooled big twin will be louder than the imports your used to riding. If you have doubts let some other Harley riders listen and let the dealer listen again. Good luck

What you're experiencing is pretty typical. My 05 Fatboy did the same thing for a while. It was real tough to ride last summer, cooking the huevos in the heat. Mine would idle real high as well. After the first 1k service everything got a little better. And now after the 5K service the engine is as smooth as butter. I couldn't believe how much torque it has now. Remember, it's a Harley. It takes a little getting used to but it's like nothing else out there. I wouldn't ride anything else now.

i suggest you get louder pipes...my 04 heritage was my first harley. when i picked it up it had the stock pipes on it(sounded like a honda[:'(]) i wouldn't go over 50 mph thought the motor was going to land in my lap.but it's all the harley noise we learned to live with or drowned out

I think you'll find that these bikes are noisy by design. If you consider all the moving parts right below where you're sitting, you can see why.

Many thanks members for your replies to my post. I appreciate your input. I guess I'll just have to get used to the engine noise and accept the fact that this is the way this engine sounds and operates. I will say that with added miles and the synthetic oil that I had put in, it "seems" quieter and cooler.....maybe the drop in temperature here in upstate NY is also helping.
