Default 1925 tractor seat on a Slim?

Hi folks,

I want to fit a Crossbones-style 1925 tractor seat on my Softail Slim.

I know the HD seat bracket/kit doesn't fit the Slim as I think the ECM cover is too wide for the Slim's rear fender.

What I want to know if this Rich Phillips kit will support the 1925 Tractor seat?

It says the springs are 7" apart, if that helps.

Anyone know?

E

I have seen some pics on this site where folks have trimmed the HD cover for a Deluxe or Heritage rear fender

Yeah I'm trying to find a 'bolt-on' solution - the Rich Phillips ones look like they have a nicer (smaller/neater) ECM cover than the HD ones

Default HD tractor seat

This seat is extremely comfortable for an all day ride. Amazing what HD got right so early in the Motorcycle game.
Mine was NOT exactly a bolt on operation, well in a way it is.
It is a cut down and welded XBones seat mount, BUT: All mount holes front and rear line up and bolt on the Slim frame. It's just that the XBones mount is too tall front and rear so needed to be chopped.

Then I got everything stowed below the frame rails, made my own cover for fender and battery, so no "bubble" or raised cover is necessary, for what I think is a pleasing look.

I have not seen anyone on this forum with the cover/ mount you linked. I have seen one from Shadetree, these covers are too tall for my taste.

Dammit - that's exactly what I was imagining, but I don't really have the skills/tools to modify or fabricate stuff.

nice job!

So my plan is...

Buy the Crossbones seat mounting kit, but then use (buy) the ECM cover from the FLS scissor spring mount kit seat instead.

Then I get the coil spring seat mount that fits the Crossbones' 1925 style seat, but with the proper ECM and frame cover for the Slim

Any reason that might not work?

Default Still some mod work required...

The Forward ECM or "battery cover" (its a 2 piece unit for the Slim, 1 piece for the 'Bones) Scissor spring holes (for that smaller curved Slim sprung seat) are closer together than the Coil spring holes for the XBones.

You will need to enlarge these battery cover holes at least 1/2 an inch or more. I did this, and was not happy with the look, not just because of the imperfect oblong holes, Its just that the raised covers don't look right to me.

The forward hinge will be a bit high, the aft spring Xbones mounts will be about 1" too high, I cut at least that much from the Bones coil spring steel spring base.

Yes, it will all bolt on if you enlarge the battery cover holes. I will take a photo of the battery cover I modded this afternoon so you can see what is needed.

That's great - thanks Steve!

I might just get the Slim's ECM cover and then make up a template and get a local fabricator make me up a batter/frame cover

Default Part of the Mod

Here are some photos of the seat mount and covers, as well as a stock front mount so you can see how much was chopped. I don't have a stock rear mount for comparison, about 1" removed:

Ill take a photo of the HD bubble cover later today.

Default Softail Slim seat

I've still not decided what seat set-up to go for on my Slim, so I need help!

With the stock 'tuck and roll' seat I was slipping off the back, plus wanted to be maybe 1" higher and 1" further forward (which might fix the 'slipping off' issue anyway)

So I left the dealer with the Super-reduced reach seat, which put me much further forward and a bit higher. But after a few rides, it's too 'cramped' and 'bucket-like' and I'm feeling it in my lower back.

I actually put the stock seat back on today and it's much better... but I still want to be higher.

I was going to go down the coil-spring 1925 'tractor' style option, but finding the right mounting kit or working out how to customise, BEFORE buying blind from the UK (at about $600) could be an expensive mistake if it's not what I want.

So, now looking at the official HD spring seat kit and mount... but my question is, will that raise me up (or forward) compared to the Slim's stock 'tuck and roll' seat?

Any other options, gratefully received!
