Default Bolt/Thread size

Hi everyone. Anyone know what size the seat bolt on the rear fender is on a 2004 Heritage Classic. I want to buy a chrome alan head bolt at a hardware shop but I don't know the thread size. Also how do you get that bolt out with the spring on it anyway and if you do get it out can you put the spring back on another bolt? Any help would be appreicated. I know the stock one is a ugly thing to look at for sure.

On my 05 Night Train the thread is 1/4 x 20. I believe it is 1/2" long.

Not sure about the bolt size, but you might want to reconsider the chrome allen head bolt. I've got them on my motor, and as soon as you wash the bike or get caught in the rain, the water will sit in the top of bolt and start rusting. When I wash the bike, I wind up taking the air hose and blowing the water out of the bolt heads, but they're still starting to rust. So you wind up either covering it up with a hot topper, or riding around with a rusty bolt. Maybe a polished stainless?

Thanks for the help. I will use polished stainless steel then. I may even get myself one of those nice bolts I see someone recommended on here. Saw that once I did a search but I just wanted to get a bolt at the local hardware store with no fuss. I'll see. I also found out that you can put the bolt in a vise and hacksaw it out of the spring thingy.

Thanks again
