i dont know the bolt size but if you think its an M6 then gs34doc is probably right with the 1/4 20. when in doubt all the hardware stores around here have a section where you can bring a bolt and thread it in and out on a wall chart to select what size your bolt is. or you can do it the old fashion way and use a set of calipers.
Here's a cheaper way. Take your 1/4 bolt and "x" the end with a hack saw. You now have a poor man's tap. Run it in a couple turns, back it out, clean out the slots, repeat until threads are clean.
Reaper, if you have a dremel tool, the ultra thin grinding disk also works really well for slotting a bolt and much easier than a hack saw.
Using either method, put a nut on the bolt first, and after slotting the bolt, turn the nut off. That will clean up the threads on the bolt before you use it on the hole.
