There is no "properly." Air comes through it, all you can do is slide the vent flap up and down to direct it. You can add to the air beating your face to a pulp or aim it down and still get beat to a slightly less degree.
Well actually there is. The air coming though is used to help push the air coming over the shield up and over your head. Adjusting the flap "properly" makes a huge difference.

Maybe you're not getting it. It doesn't work if you're too tall. The vent just pushes more air into your face.
I gotta say. The Slim S is proving to be one of my best ever bike purchases. I just completed a four day 2400 mile trip to Tulsa and back. 735 the first day and 630 the third. A friend from Tulsa joined me on the way back with his Super Glide Sport. Other than being tired from four days of riding, I feel great. 80-90mph the whole way except for a detour through the mountains in eastern Tennessee and north Georgia.

In your case, yeah... for shorties like me (5'7") it works great!
Windsplitter -- I'm 5-9 and it doesn't work that great for me. It's OK, but not great. Breaks up the turbulence coming up from underneath maybe 10 percent, 20 percent on a good day, depending on wind direction, etc.

Underneath turbulence is best handled with a pair of fangs. Now, those actually work great.
