I removed my outer primary cover only to discover that the jam nut for the clutch adjustment came off. I thought the only damage was to the webbing on the inside of the cover. Cleaned all the metal chips out (paint brush, air hose, paper towel) until couldn't find anymore.
The engine needed to be disassembled (different issue but same parts slapper who did the clutch work) and there was metal chips behind the rotor - chewed up the new stator and all the bearing inside of the primary was also shot - small particles acted like 80 grit sand paper.
I would never suggest running any motor without a complete teardown after ANY internal failure, odds are probably better of going "all in" with an off suit 2/4 in a poker game..
My lack of practice blowing up HD motors probably leaves me in the dark about "fixing" cranks and rotating assy's.. So you are probably right, throw the crank away
Spent 30+ years vaporizing pistons in blown fuel/alcohol motors and what he looks to have done is flame treated a piston (detonation) that likely led to pinched ringland and piston failure (just can not see the ring lands and top of piston very well with these pics)
HD does not blow rods out of the case when pistons fall off? lucky guys..

I to drive a fuel altered, unblown, have since the '60's. Can't afford a blower or the maintenance that go's with it., . and I was lucky enough this time that the piston didn't leave the rod. yes to everything else. Quick shut down saved me.
