Question Pre 2000 Softail mods for short riders?

I have a 1998 Springer & its a bad *** bike but the reach to forward controls is just a bit extended for my 5'8 frame.

Ive researched & looked into Reduced reach seats & controls & all of em are 2000+ models. I've been leaning towards selling the bike & buying a Dyna Low with mid controls which I am more comfortable on for sure. One last ditch effort to save this sweet ride !

Any options you guys know of?

The forwards on my V rod were too far so I got a set of offset mounts an used a set of wide pegs that saved me from getting rid of the bike.

you can also look into adding foot boards....I'm 5'8" an like the footboards on my 99 Fatboy....I had a 93 softail classic an didn't think the forwards were as bad as the V rod stock. you can also try posting in the evo section...someone may have experience with this.

Cool bike good luck making it work for you!

also, I used the reach seat with the offset peg mounts on the V rod an it made a world of difference. Try putting a 2" thick piece of foam or firm cushion behind you an sit on the bike an see how it feels before dropping cash on a seat or send a stock seat to mean city cycles an tell them what you want to accomplish an they'll make a seat to fit you.

I'd think you could get foot boards like those on my FL Springer, that'll shorten the reach up a lot. I think any Evo softail footboards would work, you'd have to change the shifter and brake pedal as well.

Since you are dealing with an Evo, aftermarket is the way to go.

For controls, look at JP Cycles, Dennis Kirk, etc.
They carry numerous brands.

For seats, there are more options than I can count. Mean City Cycles has a great reputation for building custom seats.

If I was looking for a bike, I would buy yours. An Evo Springer is one of my favorites. There is no way I can justify two bikes though.

The bike in the pic appears to have 3 or 4 inch extended forward controls...remove them and go back to standard reach controls. Hard to tell in the pics but it looks like you have the plates that extend the stock controls....post some pics of your controls, and I bet you will have a dozen people wanting to do an even trade with you. And post this in the evo section...you will get a lot more hits.

Tom, I was wondering that too...they looked extended to me too compared to my 94. My 94 was comfy for me an I'm 5'8" 30" inseam...I do think the wider pegs or bmx style are more comfortable for me compared to plain pegs. if they are extended a stock swap an maybe a seat an he should be good to go. If I had a springer they'd be prying it out of my hands.

note you will need that Arlen Ness rear kickstand if you lower it too much.
