Default Wind relief.

I'm not big on windscreens, and think my 01 Softail Deuce looks best without anything up front. However, if I am doing any highway riding, with my feet out front and my arms stretched forward, the wind pressure is pretty strong.

Anybody have any real success with any of the smaller sized easy on/off windscreens? Looking for something to take the pressure off my torso without buffeting my head. Price not a concern, quality and effectiveness is. Thanks,

After reading lots of great reviews, I tried the National Cycle Flyscreen, and it has worked out well. Looks too small to do anything, but actually does a pretty good job of taking most of the wind pressure off your chest. Also available in clear, which is what I have, but the clear doesn't show up very well in photos. Also, much less buffeting than any of the larger shields I've been behind.

Yep, I don't have this ^^^, but rather one of the short versions of the QD windshields which I've had modified to lay back (slant rearward) more than when it was stock. Do know that a windscreen can have "ample" effect without it being anywhere near large enough for you to hide behind.

I fought with the same issue for several months. I loved riding the bike without the windshield, but the wind pressure was enormous.
I tried various windshield heights, from the "barn door" sized stocker, to a 16" recurve. The helmet buffeting was so severe with the 16" that I couldn't use it.

With nothing to lose, I cut it down. First, down to 11" straight off the top. Big improvement, but still some buffeting. So, I cut 2" off each side and tapered it in on top.

Result - takes the wind-pressure off the mid section, and puts my helmet in clean air. Perfect. Looks good too. Not so overpowering. A clear cut case of "Less is More" and a little less than that is just about right!

Default Great thread!!!!

Mike and Mark, That is so firkin cool!
Mike: Do you have another photo from the front?
Your Bike and 'Shield Looks great from this angle!
I would love to test ride this before I cut mine down and get rid of my fangs... Helmet buffeting reduced ALOT with fangs, but I like the minimal look!
Difficult to tell from this photo but I think you used the "quick release" stock HD mount.
I ride daily here in So Cal, and I am definitely interested in this mod. I always wear a full face helmet, this might be the ticket for me.

I'll have to look in my photo files this evening, although I did post some in a windshield thread a few months back. I also tried the wind deflectors. They did nothing for me. I took 'em off and now they're in my "Well that didn't work out as planned" parts stash!

But yeah, I did use the stock quick release. I bought another one on craigslist with a full sized windshield to have as a spare for those occassions when I want a full sized screen without having to unbolt the plastic and swap it out that way.

You can get plastic replacement screens to fit the existing hardware from places like Long Ride Shields for fairly cheap. Sometimes they have a half price sale. Get a new full size, then cut down your stocker.

At any rate, my Triumph Bonneville is a bike I wanted to keep naked, but a small screen cut the wind blast to the torso enough to cure a bunch of problems I didn't realize were seven related to not having a screen. I used to get numb hands, and now that is a thing of the past since I can loosen my grip a good amount.

Mike, Funny how some of us including me find the Fangs work GREAT, and others don't feel the fangs work at all. I can't stand how the fangs look, but I have tried removing my fangs, and find I can't use my Q/R full windshield without the fangs. Fangs reduce the buffeting for me.

I will look for the windshield mount that the Deluxe uses, I think its called nostalgia windshield.

I will also look for the thread you mentioned as well. That way I can see how much material you removed from your 'shield.

Jet, I found that thread, but it doesn't look like I posted photos. Here's one I pulled from my facebook page. And yeah, nostalgia mount. It's 11" high from the top of the headlight. This was the 16" screen. So I took off 5", and then 2" on each side. It completely eliminated the helmet buffeting, even without the lower deflectors.

This was on a 600 mile trip up 395 from Lake Isabella and returning via Yosemite back to the Fresno CA area. I was still fresh after a 400 miles on the first day. Coulda gone another 100 miles easy. So, for me, it works really well.
