If I were you I would get hold of the service manual for your year bike.
It will detail EXACTLY whatneeds to be done for virtually anything on it.
And oddly enough they are fairly well laid out.
Kind of a nice change from many manuals I have been stuck with.

I'll second the manual. You will also have to remove the swing arm for belt R&R.

Sometimes I wonder if it's better to have a belt drive primary and a chain drive??

Yes. Remove the outer primary, the entire primary drive, the inner primary, and the swing arm pivot bolts. Don't remove the swing arm itself, or the shocks. When you reinstall the inner primary...make sure you loosen the motor mount bolts and the transmission mount bolts. The front " ears " on the inner primary break real easy if ANY misalighnment takes place. You'll have to remove the 2 starter bolts from the right side to get the inner primary off. You don't need to remove the starter completely though, but you do need to remove the bolt holding the starter jsck shaft to the starter.

Getting a manual is excellent advice. I would get the factory manual...not a chiltons or some other manual. If you don't already have them, get both an inch pound and foot pound torque wrench, and use them on everything without exception.

I have a 95 fxstc. You need a service manual and a parts manual, the parts manual has exploded views of all parts showing how they are assembled. Very helpful!!!!!!!!!!
