Default 89 FLHS Primary ????'s

OK....I've got this thing almost apart, but cant seem to get the inner primary to come off. The service manual says thats there's 2 bolts on the trans side that are under/behind the primary.......I can only find 1 that the ground strap was attached to. There is NOTHING where the book says the other one is suposed to be. There is a boss just below the rear inside bolt that I can see, but it's next to the oil filter and there is no bolt to be seen. Also the service maual is kinda foggy on wether or not I have to pull the snapring on the trans mainsaft before I remove the inner primary.

ANYONE have some advise or knowlege to share?

No snap rings need to be removed.

Have you removed the starter mount bolts?

That second bolt is there. You will not see it, but can feel it.
I had the same problem on my 1989 Ultra. I searched and finally found it. It was covered by oily dirt.

Any insight as to where to look? According to the service manual its right next to the drive belt.

The starter is out of the bike.

I'm looking at Figure 6-36 on page 6-25 in my manual. It shows two bolts with their heads visible at 2 and 8 o'clock, plus two screwed in from the other side at 5 and 7 o'clock. My money is on the 7 o'clock one being your nemesis!

Well I'm pretty sure the "2nd" bolt doesnt exsist on my bike. I found an inner primary on ebay that is for 89-93 FLHS and it only has 1 bolt behind the case, right in the middle like the one I found on my inner primary. I need to check the part number against mine when I get back on Monday, but it looks EXACTLY like mine.

My 88 only had 1 bolt. Is your case loose anywhere or is it tight front & rear? If you can move it at all, you could slide a razor blade backwards inside the gasket area & it would stop on a dowel or a bolt.
Hatch.

Good idea with the razorblade! I've been gone all weekend and will dive back into it tomorrow. The inner is loose to a degree, it wiggles around a bit, will know more tomorrow. I think it will come off with a little proding.

Inner primary is off, and had only 1 hidden bolt. I will be getting more parts tomorrow morning. The bend-over locks on the bolts inside the primary are brittle and 2 ears have broken off already, so I will just use new ones. I'm also gunna pickup a new crankshaft seal to put in.

My next task for now is to saw the old exhaust off, the PO decided that welding it together, along with alot of other stuff, was easier than doing it the right way. I already have a TC exhaust to replace it with.
