Default fatboy differences

I am looking to buy a Fatboy, I am ALSO totally new to Harleys as I have ridden Sport bikes all my life but its time to go the other way and enjoy riding the bike instead of how fast I can go. I have looked around abit and obviously newer the model the better, unfortunately I live in Sweden where prices are alot higher than in the US. anyway I am looking at the years 1999 to 2001.
Is there much difference between the pre 2000 models ? Or is it just the motor ? Is the newer motor much better, are there any other major upgrades ?
Say my budget allows me to buy a 2001 yet I can get an identical 1999 bike 1000 dollars less is it better to buy the 2001 model ?
Thanks in advance

The newer models have wider tires and the newer they are - the more chrome they have....

The biggest difference is the engine. The 1999 models came with the 1340cc Evolution engine which is rubber mounted. The 2000 model came with the 1450cc Twin Camengine which is solid mounted and has counter balancers inside the engine. Both are excellent motors providing nice HP & TQ.

Another thing to consider, often I see aftermarket parts listed for 2000 & up Softtails and IMO it seems theres more parts available and theyre more compatable with other bikes if its BET 2000-2006, allowing you to get used parts easier

The TC-88 is a sweet running engine. After 35K miles in 2.5 years I have not had a single engine problem. This baby just keeps eating up the tarmac and is always ready for more.

Pre 2000 has the 80 inch Evo motor (damn near bullet proof) after 2000 they have the 88 inch Twin Cam motor.

The Differences - Evo is a single cam, Twin Cam has 2 cams (hence the name). Both have been good performers but the TC88 came with two versions...the early one wasn't balanced. There was also a recall on some of the early ones on the cam chain tensioners.

IMHO...buy the one you get the best deal on. Either will be good bikes (but the TC88 is a little easier to do performance mods to).

My opinion....Get one of the newer models for the reason tbroenick97 said. My Dad has a 2000 Fatboy and there some parts that he can't get for his because they are made for 2001-up. I guess it all depends on what kind of customizing you are wanting to do. If customization isn't an issue, go with whatever you can get the best deal on. They all look and run good.
