I have a small shop and work on Harley's from around my area and help stranded riders get back on the road. Not a business but rather a hobby which keeps me off the bar stool.
Last weekend a bike was towed to my shop. The owner is one of those guys that never gets involved in the maintenance of his bike. He stated that it died while riding. Not much info to diagnose the problem. Long story short, I discovered a roller needle from one of the inner cam bearings stuck to the Crank Position Sensor (Attached Photo) Draining the oil I found that he had less than a quart in the bike and the oil was full of large metal fragments both steel and brass.
He destroyed his engine simply because he was to lazy to check his oil. A very expensive lesson!

Good advice for all.

I will admit that I don't really WORK on my bike. I have been known to bolt on the occasional accessory, but the basic maintenance items, oil, gas, air. Those simple things even I can manage.
I am willing to bet that the owner of that doomed bike spends hours washing the bike and polishing the chromed parts.. but heck.. he doesn't know what an oil dipstick is... or where is located :-)
