Thanks for sharing how to clean the switch. I have not had a problem but you just don't know when it could happen. Guess I'll be checking mine.
Yes it stung me twice so I thought I'd put a thread up to hopefully save someone else the hassle and potential danger I had. The bike dying on the highway was scary luckily jiggling the switch kept me running to get off the road safely and figure out what was wrong (a Google search led me to this problem).

[(racerkvn 3-17-16) ". . . cleaned everything and moved the worn contact bridge from the "IGN" position to the "ACC" location . . . ]
I've got all 3 contacts out now & 1 is obviously worn & very greasy, 1 a little worn, 1 like new.
I want to put the like-new one where the obviously worn one was. I don't know which came from where;
Referencing Figure 1 (attached, below) from Joe G and GTMalone, left side of photo, which positions should the 3 U-shape contacts go? (Very Worn, A Little Worn, and Like New). Fig 1 below.
{my guess: Very Worn, top. Little Worn, lower left, Like New lower right} Am I right?
Looks like the IGN position is worn through, as far as I am aware of they cannot be replaced so you may need to replace the switch. You can order the switch keyed to your current key.

Probly, but the photo isn't my switch: its from GTMalone's instruction set)
On my switch all three areas of contact look pretty good and though there is wear on one of the 3 U-shape contact 'bridges' there is plenty of spring pressure for solid contact.
To test the switch, is this right?: With switch out of bike, jumper wire with alligator clips from battery positive to center tab on switch, and probe test light from battery negative to probe end on IGN tab, then probe Accessory tab. Correct?
