Default breakout seat mount

So I found a decent way to make the solo mounts lower profile. Home depot sells quarter inch mirror mounts. I had to widen the holes a tad to get them through. What I found though was they were still loose and not secured. I found 3/8" rubber grommets that do a good job of securing them. The way the mounts fastened, I used vice grips to stabilize them underneath, then tightened them on the top side with the bolts. Basically this pushed the bottom side closer to the fender/grommet. Those bolts are wide enough to secure the passenger pillions and all you need to do is move it up or down. I'm going to look out for wider topped ones but for now it works.

that's pretty decent. how far below the fender does the insert stick through- any chance of tire contact? does the mirror mount come with both the flat top bolt as well as the insert?

I suppose you could use a wider washer under the bolt to expand the surface area.

Those are called jacknuts.

Here is a cheap tool to install them.

BINGO! and they work perfect for this application because it forces them to remain stable on both sides (though in my case, I needed the grommets to stabilize them. Here's some shots from underneath. I think they stick out MAYBE between 1/3-1/2 an inch. The bolts I got have wide flat tops which work fine for the passenger seat. The only reason I would look out for another one is for more of a thumb grip in removing. Here are some underneath shots. Totally fine from a non-lowered breakout. I imagine it would be fine for someone who's is lowered as well.

Something like this might be the ideal piece for it.

Another thing I would consider changing is a grommet with a wider surface area. That one is fine, but it would make the overall structure infinitely more stable.

Just saw that. Didn't come with it. Had to rummage through the hardware section to find something with that type of head at a 1/4in bolt. I would stick with 1" long though because between the fender, grommet (if you use one). and the seat base, you aren't left with a ton of play. Just enough to unscrew it to mount the passenger seat.

Thanks- those bolts look like furniture cap screws, 1/4-20 thread. should be fine as long as the tire does not hit the ends of screws at full compression. that would really suck! I had that happen once on my Big Dog, screwing around and taking off from a stop hard enough the front tire came up. It ripped the nut right through the fender and put a gash all the way around the tire. my fault for not checking the bump stop length. At least I needed a new fender and tire anyway. fortunately.
