2002 or 2014 Heritage
My question is what are the differences? Is one more reliable? And which would be easier / cheaper to install performance upgrades if I decided to later. What about maintenance? does one or the other have a maintenance item that is a pain in the a$$?
Thanks for all your help.
With an age spread of 11 years, it's always better to get the newer bike. There will be a bunch of upgrades over 11 years. A year or two, maybe not, but 11 years.... a bunch.
If money is tight, and the '02 is EFI, the '02 would be a great bike. I have an '03 EFI Heritage and still love it! The main "glitch" in that year was the cam tensioners. They would need to be addressed. Anything from replacing the tensioners with Cyco shoes, $25 + gaskets (if you do the labor yourself) to getting a conversion cam, cam plate. hydraulic tensioners, tune for around $1800 installed.
A big difference for performance add ons, is that the '13 has factory O2 sensors, the '02 does not.
With the '02, you'll be limited to flash tune maps or a dyno tune. With the '13 you can get a tuner and dial in a map with an auto tune feature.
I went to the trouble of getting a PowerVision and Auto tune pro, and added 18mm O2 bungs to my "03 exhaust, so I can tune it myself. So it's doable, just more hardware to add.
Like everyone says , the '13 has many good advantages, but the '02 can still be a great bike... let your wallet be your guide...
God luck...!
I think you guys talked me into the newer bike, especially with the ease of tuning hattitude talks about.
The money is basicly the same. The bank will only go 3 years on the older bikes but 5 on a 2012 or newer, so payments come out about the same. called the insurance lady and it's only $10 more a month for the newer bike.
I still gotta get my license so it may be a few weeks yet before I get one. I havn't been on a bike in over 20 years till a buddy talked me into riding his fat boy the other day, now I got the bug!! We'll see if I can pass the skills test next monday, but I think I'm gonna take a rider course at the local college too. I think it would be a good refresher and help lower insurance too.
Thanks for all the input guys, it is really helpfull
I've been riding dirt bikes since 1971 and road bikes (all Harleys) since 1977. When I moved to CA in '78, I fell in love with riding without a helmet.... just a totally different experience than I was used to. Spare me the lectures, I know the pros/cons and made my choice.....
In '92ish CA passed their helmet law, I tried a quick ride with an old helmet and just didn't like it..... I sold my '89 Heritage and didn't ride for 10 years.......
A friend had an issue with his bike and begged me to test ride it and give him my opinion.... big mistake, I didn't realize how much I missed riding, even with a helmet... The bug bit me hard.....
Now I have two Harleys......
Good luck and enjoy the new bike!!!!
