My other options are starting to make me think that I've made a poor choice. I don't have the wrenching skills that seem to be required to fix half of the stuff that has been discussed in this thread, nor do I have the money to get them fixed or build a different mill.

I've been a big fan of my bike up till now, and I do love this community, but what am I supposed to do if I'm half way to Idaho and my lifters take a dump? I'm just venting, but I'm actually starting to get a bit pissed that I have no way out now. I just have to live with the possibility (probability) that my engine is going to take a dump when I'd still be running down the road on a different bike. For the price I paid, I don't think I should have to be dealing with this...

I'm hoping it's not as bad as it's being made out to be, but I just get the feeling that it's going to be in the back of my mind the first time I leave town on a trip...

I wish I had a mech buddy that has been working on these things for a long time that could give me some lessons on how to work though these issues myself. No offense to others, but I don't really feel comfortable learning the inner workings of the Harley engine on my brand new bike.
Heres some advice .Just enjoy your bike go out on a long ride and take it all in.You asked about problems and you got what you asked for. Now ask about how many are satisfied with their bikes or those who havent had any issues I bet the percentage will be higher! Enjoy your new bike RIDE SAFE.

Exactly.. What was there out the door price.? Im guessing it was more then what you paid. When i buy a Harley i dont pay more then MSRP out the door. And that's including tax tags and everything.

i love my Softails but like you I am looking for something more reliable to tour on. I'll be buying another ride (tourer/bagger) around this time next year and Harley isn't even on my list. I don't want to have something known for having problem on long road trip.

Well I have to eat crow since my Fat Boy S engine had a cams and lifter issue and needed a new engine. Fortunately 24,000 miles with 2 months left of the warranty. Harley paid for the new engine and install and I sold the bike in September 2018.
