Default Electricle Problems

All,

New to this. Not sure where to get advice. I have some electrical problems with my 2009 Fat Boy. Just put in a Brand new fully charged battery. Ran great all week to work. A couple times the Engine light and the Battery light came on at the exact same time. It was intermittent though. Work was only 11 miles so didn't ride too long. Decided to go on longer ride and within about 50 miles the Motorcycle started cutting out and like it was losing spark at random times. Then eventually the Engine Light and batter Light came on. Code P0562 (Low or High Voltage) and it ended up restarting up and then ended up completely dying while cruising at 70 mph. Battery completely DRAINED. Appears that batter is not getting charged. Is this a Stator or a Voltage Regulator problem? Or Both? How can I test the Voltage Regulator to see if it is good versus the Stator? I don't want to buy both if I don't have to. Please advise. Thanks

Sounds like there's a fault in the charging system. Assuming all your cables and grounds are good you have either a bad voltage regulator or a bad stator (or both).

Go to the Electrical/Lighting/Alarm section of this forum. There are stickys that explain troubleshooting the charging system.

This is pretty helpful. You will need a basic voltmeter. Make sure battery cables are tight, check for corrosion on regulator.

I took a fluke and read the volts with bike not running. 12.57 volts. Started bike and nothing changed. 12.50 volts. Revved the engine a few times and no change to the 12.50. Do this mean a bad stator or voltage regulator.

It could be either one. Take the regulator into a shop and have it checked. If it's good then you know where the problem lies.

Check for ac coming into regulator 16-18vac when revved up. If your getting the right ac amount, then regulator is bad.

Like this person sid unplug the stator and start the bike. Using your volt meter check for AC voltage on the plug.
