Hello all been rippin around on my new softail........i have been reading horror stories about a oil bypass valve mod and switching to gear driven cam gears......are these necessary on the newer VT's and what are the must do mods as far as for longevity of the motor.
Mine most do was Stage 1 (AC and Slip-ons) but with the dyno tune not the factory download stage 1 tune. With the dyno tune you get just what your motor will do and can customize it to your riding example here in AZ I needed it to be set to run cooler (richer). Know that a motor with serial #1 and one with serial # 2 will have different characteristics.
I struggled with which tuner to choose the HD Screaming Eagle Pro tuner or 3rd parties. Here is what I was told and believe; the SE HD tuner writes directly to the ECM, 3rd parties sit on top if it and fake out the factor ECM. I am sure others will have input but that is what I was told and believe.

First of all, welcome and congrats on the bike, I have the same year and model and I love it!
The cam tensioner issue was mainly a problem in 2000 - 2006 models, the 2016 has a different design. It doesn't hurt to keep an eye on them, though, anything can fail prematurely. I believe the oil bypass valve issue was from the same era, once again, shouldn't be an issue, but worth checking occasionally.
In my opinion I would just drive it as is for the longevity.to make it run better ,slip on mufflers and a Vance and Hines fp3 to tune it.and it flashes to the computer not piggy back.
