Default 2016 Softtail oil capacity findings

200 miles and I can't wait until the 1000 mile service, which kills me to bring it in. I changed the crank oil and filter along with the tranny. I went for a half hr ride 95 degree weather, dropped the oil. When I drain any oil I lean the bike to the left, right and then back to the center. I do this for a half hr,try to get as much out as possible.I measured 28oz of Redline v-twin transmission fluid before filling, then checked with the o-ring on the dipstick just touching the cases. The reading was dead on full mark,I drained out exactly 32 oz of the factory fill. This is why I enjoy and trust myself to service my bikes.Anyway heads up if you service it yourself. The crank with the filter, drained exactly how I mentioned, takes 2qrts 28oz measured hot after a ride,a hair below full, and I mean a hair.Did not touch the primary yet,but will.

You are low on your tranny fluid.....You don't thread the dipstick in, just set it into the hole in the clutch release cover and check. You will most likely need to add 4-6oz!

You are incorrect .By the manual, thread the dipstick in until the o-ring just touches the cases,if you just rest it,you will get a low reading and over fill it.This is a 2016

Shouldn't be changing anything during the break-in period.

No, I'm not.

Your bike, power to you.

Dealer is supposed to go through drain offs and check for contaminants like metal shavings at 1k service and make sure a bum bike didn't leave the factory.

I am still bringing it in for the 1000 mile service, but they will use the oil of my choice that I will bring in.Aggressive oil changes especially for the crank during break-in only does the motor good.

You're new to the forum and welcome. You'll find that oil threads like yours are a dime a dozen. You make it sound like none of us have changed fluids before. I just have a few questions.

If you trust yourself to service your bike, why bring it in for the 1000 mile service? You can do that and have the oil analyzed yourself. You don't need the dealer.

How much longer will your engine last than mine since my first oil change was at 1000 miles?

If you are so **** about the engine oil during break in, why did you rock the bike back and forth for 30 minutes to "get as much out as possible" instead of using a scavenger system to get it all out?

HD recommends changing the engine oil every 5k miles for my 2012. Assuming it's the same on your 2016, how often do you plan on doing it after the break-in period?

After reading many oil threads, you will find that most of us keep the oil level midway between add and full on the dipstick so the oil doesn't blow out the air cleaner. Even measured "a hair below full, and I mean a hair" may be too full.

Congrats on the new bike.

Welcome to the forum. Most of us have been servicing our own bikes and autos for decades. What are you going to do for your second post...tell us how to adjust the clutch?
