Default Vance & Hines Slip Ons Help

Proud owner of a new 2016 fatboy S. Enjoying it, but miss the rumble that I had on my last bike so I decide to go out and get some Vance & Hines slip ons. Got the stock mufflers off fairly easy. How the hell are you supposed to get access to the nut on the V&H muffler?

I am hours into this thing and cant express my frustration. Why the hell wouldnt they weld the nut to the muffler? I can get it started, but cannot get a hold of the nut while trying to turn the bolt. Anyone else had issues with this? Any suggestion on a tool that will fit in the tight space? Ive never been more frustrated with a job that should be pretty easy.

I tried to get pictures but couldnt get anything clear. At this point they are on, here is how I got it (and it aint pretty) The challenge is they have a lock nut & washer not welded onto the muffler. With my pinky in one side and another finger in the other I could get the nut started but because it was a lock nut it would just go on a few threads. Its in such a tight spot that you cant get anything on it to hold it while you tighten the bolt. Add that to the fact that the damn washer keeps falling off while your trying to start the nut and its a bit of a disaster due to the tight space. The tight space may be unique to a fatboy, because I see other talking about how easy these are but I find it hard to believe.

Here is how I got it. To solve the washer falling off, I superglued the thing to the nut. Sounds crazy but it held it on long enough to get the nut started but then broke lose. Since I couldnt get a wrench on the nut and doing this by myself I couldnt hold a pair of needle nose pliers while turning the bolt, I went to plan b. Home depot had a pair of needle nose vice grips. With a bit of work, I was able to get them in position and get a grip on the nut. Total pain in the *** and I will not do it again.

$45.00 at the dealer is a steal.

OP,

Had the same issue! I finally had a tech from my dealer assist me. We had to align the washer with a needle nose plier and then we used a small palm wrench with a magnetic wrench to complete this tough task.

It took us about 40 minutes, while downing a cold one and small chit chat. I then gave him $30 gas money... All is good now.

The end result was worth it; however, I may have to purchase some quit baffles. This is a loud exhaust!

Enjoy ur new ear candy.

Cheers/B

Benito - They sure are loud, but seem to quiet down a bit as I pick up speed. Its raining here today, so only got to take a quick spin around the block.

I have pictures on my phone, will post them later.

Overall love the sound, but if I could start over, would buy a full set of pipes and pay the dealer to install. Would not recommend these slip ons to anyone based just on the install experience.

^^^ Rotflmao...

I agree with you, 100%. Had I done it all over again, I would have installed a good 2 into 1. I Installed them on my '10 Street Glide, '05 Fatty & my '03 Dyna. The flatter torque curve is noticeable...

Cheers/B

You've sorted your slip-ons now, so this may be a moot point, but... what nut were you talking about?

I had a set of 3" slash cut V&H slip-ons and had no issues installing them on my Slim - just being nosey, but what/where was the issue?

Stinker -
On the muffler there is a tab where the nuts & washer have to slip into. That tab is so tight that I couldnt fit anything in there to get a hold of the nut once I had it started. The angle of the way it fit on the bike and the tight space made it damn near impossible to get anything on the nut to hold it. If it ever stops raining, Ill take a picture outside to show you what I mean. In my garage I cant get a clear enough pic.
