The last winter project that got pushed to this winter. Lots to be done, lots to do, but some of the heavy stuff is finished. Ported heads, compression releases installed, upgraded valve springs. Cylinders punched out to 95" .Performance Machine 10.5-1 pistons. S&S .585 lift gear drive cam kit.
One I'm really not too sure about is push rods and lifters, are the stock ones worthy? Not that I won't, but I'm not comfortable with the idea of adjustable's. .. am I at the point I may need a carb upgrade too, or should I really think about something like a super E? From my gathering of info, seems like the stock cv carb with the proper jetting and a new manifold would be just fine..kinda the plan. Always seems like tough decisions, no matter how much reading I do
One thing worked out today. Finally got a dial indicator and the crank runout is <.0025 Was kinda sweating that, got the gear drive cam before I checked..
I've ran adjustable pushrods on both bikes, with combined mileage on them in the 6 figures, never had a single issue. Otoh, lifters get changed every 30k, last set were Feuling stockers, call it my comfort zone.
You'll love gear drives...install them and forget them.
Mikuni 42 works and feels much better on a 95 than a modified CV40.
Reaper's engine is punched out to 98 ci with 10.5:1 compression, .580 lift cams (Head Quarters HQ-0039G) and the stock CV40 carb, rejetted, works great. Stock intake manifold, too. It also has Screamin Eagle adjustable pushrods, and Head Quarters Black Ops lifters (but I ran the stock lifters for many years, and thousands of miles, in this build without issue).
S&S Quickees, S&S standard lifters and a Mikuni HSR42 would be the direction I would go from here....If you don't want to change all of that at least do the lifters, they are cheap and with so many lifter issues on these bikes would be a good idea while you are there...
Seems more like the keihin is a decent carb with proper jetting and a needle change, but the HSR42 is a much better idea. The "easy kit is well under $300 on ebay, so it's not a budget breaker. Same with the 'rods n' tappets. Just a wiser idea for some short change.
