Default Grey Paint on Cases

Hello all,

I have tried searching... but not managed to find anything:

This pic is old but it shows the problem with the grey paint on the inner primary case having been worn away by the previous owner. I would like to canvas options as to what is best to do:

* Leave as is... ugly but works fine...
* Remove cases and get polished?
* Remove cases and get powder coated. Can you match the grey? Or, go for satin black?
* Is there a grey paint that could be used in-situ?

Any good ideas? Have others had the same problem?

Thanks, Jayne

I think I would spend a whole lot of time carefully masking things off with tape then spray it wrinkle black after appropriate prep work.

It is going to be difficult to mask adequately but will still be less hassle than removing the engine.

Instead of spraying everything it might be easier and less messy using a brush.

There have been some threads in the sporty and dyne forums about taping the frame etc and spraying engine in frame. Harley sells rattle cans of the paint too. (or at least used to do ...)

If you search with google through the site it is easier - Just copy the following and paste in google search window.

site:www.hdforums.com "painting engine"

Here is a thread about a guy painting his touring engine in frame ... lots of taping to do as you can see in the pictures.

I wouldn't waste time painting the complete engine black. IMHO the silver engine makes your bike stand out. You need to ask yourself if you really want to spend the time & money. If you're going to remove inner/outer I would suggest you inspect all moving parts very closely. Check into glass beading. Good luck

I'm with 103. Ride it; something more important will come up later that WILL need attended to. Save your energy.

As far as painting it black? Not me, at least when the silver wears off in places there's aluminum underneath and that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. But all of that is personal preference. I don't give a good d*mn about the asthetics of my bikes, only the function concerns me.

Just put a chrome Kury inner primary cover strip over it. Old trick is to cover bad spots with chrome accesories, plus looks good to.

A good tip to cover things you don't want to paint is to use plasti-wrap.

Hi there and thanks for all the replies.

I wouldn't need to paint the whole engine if I was just touching up on the primary cases. Do Harley sell rattle tins of paint in the appropriate colour or is there a better alternative?

But I am erring on the side of leaving it at the moment as 103 and nomad suggest and when something major occurs & I need to remove primary cases, then I will get the problem fixed then.

Thanks, Jayne.

Sorry, definitely not the way I want to go... More, I'm trying to remove all the chrome accessories!
