I have an 07 FXDC Black. It has the silver cased engine with chrome on the edges of the cooling fins. I much prefer the older 88s I see that have black instead of the silver. How much of a chore is it to paint the engine aside from what is chrome?
It isn't a hard job if your case is out of the frame. It must be cleaned meticulously to get oil residue off in all those lil spaces. Dealing with aluminum isn't bad but if you want a good job that last's a while you have to scuff it with a fine abrasive just before you prime or paint because it will oxidize fairly quickly. use high quality paint & primer for a long lasting job. or use high heat paint or barbecue paint if you plan on touching it up once in a while.
I painted the barrels on my 88 evo last spring while it was in frame just to improve appearance until I pull the engine this winter. I had to do a lot of masking but it looks good & no flaking so far. I used high heat paint, no primer but a very clean motor. I also fired up the bike after I removed the masking & baked it on like the instruction suggested.
Hatch.
My husband painted the engine of his 08 Dyna Street Bob using grill spray paint. In fact, he did damn near his entire bike! LOL He took his time and masked off everything with paper and blue painter's tape. He did a few rides since the engine painting (he just did it not too long ago) and so far it's doing good.
If you have the patience to mask everything off and take your time with the actual painting, it can look real good.
How much work is it to pull the eng/trans? This is coming from someone who works on diesels for a living and has plenty of experience with R&Rs on engines in cars/trucks.

Compared to a car or truck the bike is easy. If you pull it the finished product should be better. You now have silver powdercoat on there. Just remove the grease and dry it good. The paint will adhere to the powdercoat just fine.

That's what I was going to mention. Also, I don't believe the edges of the fins are chrome, just polished aluminum. Follow the other's tips along with instructions from the manufacturer for application of the paint you choose, and I'd bet it will come out lookin great!
DON'T Forget... We all LOVE pics during and after the project!
