Default Speedo issues

Hi again all.

Working with a 2003 Softail Standard Carbed

Finally got the thing on the road for a bit today and the speedo is not working. I am suspecting a faulty speed sensor. This is located on the trans about 5" from the dipstick correct? It looks like it there but I keep seeing videos and pics of one on the back of the trans where you would have to remove the rear wheel shield to access. I must be seeing different models/years.

Also, what is the normal protocol for the speedo when the key is turned on/off. Mine will SOMETIMES go up to 120 when key on (not started) and SOMETIMES not. Is that just a diagnostic "feature" or a defect?

Try cleaning the speedo sensor....if no luck, swap it out for a new one.
Parts # 74430-00B - Sensor
# 11289A - "O" ring
# 3594 - Screw

Have a look here: http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....USING ASSEMBLY

I have an 09 Fatboy and it's behind the tranny... gotta take the wheel off and splash plate to get to it. I'm assuming the didn't move it between 03 & 09, but not sure. I tried cleaning mine and it lasted another month or so... up to you.

Back at this.

Took the speed sensor out and cleaned it off although it was pretty clean. Not covered in shavings at all.

Also, the speedo does NOT go into the diagnostic mode like I keep reading about and is also in the manual. This is NOT an EFI unit so I know that it will not have the OBD codes but it seems that it has speedo diagnostics available on some bikes. Not sure if this is one or not. It seems that I have read about bikes even older than this on having the speedo diagnostics.

Also, the odometer does work so I am thinking that maybe the speedo itself is bad. Bike only has 6600 miles on it but and apparently it did not work before it sat for years either. I know things can go bad at anytime but probably unlikely.

Had similar issues when my 2002 Fat Boy carbed was new. Bad voltage regulator in my case.
