all the specs (even looked at old belt), and all seems correct - can you tell me what you think (any help appreciated)?

I'm with you. I don't think there is any way a belt can stretch 2". If a tensioner was fitted that had so much tension that could possibly hasten stretching a belt the heat generated would be so great the belt would break very very very quickly, and I still don't think its possible for Kevlar strands to stretch 2" with only around 76" of total length.

And the belt would be at it tightest when the trans output shaft, swingarm pivot and the rear axle are in line with each other. If lowering it changes the line up and the axle goes more and more above the line without coming thru the line, the belt would get looser and looser as the bike is lowered.

Exactly what I think, which poses my original problem... a) how the *#%!€?* does this occur and b) what's up: if I could work out these, I'd fix em (or attempt to). I'm due to put on a new primary chain and tensioner (as it's maxed), but as for the belt/adjustment, I'm totally confused.com ( it's good to know others are too!)

It just makes no sense. It's a pretty straight forward set up...2" play, for no obvious reason justvtellsme my bike's got a boogieman inside... drivin me nuts! Hate to give in, but looks like it's a 'tow-to-the-man-who-can' (i.e. Offload the problem) and see what they come up with (once my wallets empty!!!!

Well, if nothing has changed (including the belt) and the belt is now 2" too big after taking the tensioner off, the tensioner is the ONLY part of the equation that could have stretched the belt. There isn't anything else that touches the belt.

Now, my original thought would be whoever installed the trike kit put a different than stock belt on it as part of the kit since it came with the tensioner assembly. But you said it hadn't been changed. So that takes me back to, the tensioner has to be the only thing to cause it to stretch.

Car tires have been made with aramid(kevlar) belts since the 70's If they would stretch 2" under 40 pounds of air pressure and with the heat generated with use they would be useless and tires would be balooning left and right. I'd look elsewhere.

The previous tensioner is, as you say, the only thing that could have done this, but (always a BUT), surely the belt would have snapped well before it got to this amount of stretch? If there's anyone who says "Yup, a drive belt CAN stretch this much without breaking"...and that's supported by others, then I'll accept that 100% - but no-one really has. I've never heard of it

Bite the bullet and get another belt, if it fits, great, if not we'll need to move onto the next step in diagnosing the problem.

What's the problem? Count the teeth on the front pulley, count the teeth on the back pulley, Buy a new belt! SIMPLE!

seems a stupid question after this much debate, but did you measure the belt rather than counting teeth?
