You've got a le pera seat on it. Check the part number on the bottom and search for it or call le pera and see what model it's for.

Welcome to the "Bitsa" club. I like you bought a custom built "Harley" about a month ago. It's my first Harley also so lack of knowledge is a drawback for sure. I've owned and built bikes for many years but no Harley's.

Mine is a combo of aftermarket parts. Built about the same time as yours and there are some similarities except mine has a Harley springer front fork. Mine was built in 2000. It has a Paughco softail frame and an 1999 S&S EVO 88 CI engine.

Our engines look close. I noticed you said that the top end on yours is Harley. Your rocker covers look like S&S. The Harley ones have a pair of vertical grooves that yours don't have.

You will find that many Harley parts will fit the bike...others won't.

I had the carb off yesterday to clean it and it is a Harley CV40 so parts are easy. Has a bit of a stumble at low RPM and doesn't want to idle until warm (takes a long time before it will idle).

We could trade stories while we try to figure these bikes out. There isn't a lot of help on the web with these bikes for some reason. I guess the Harley people think they are not "real" Harley's.

Here is a link to my thread with more pictures.

Already tried that...sticker has been removed. No other markings...thanks though:-) If I can't narrow it down with my buddy's 95 seat, I'll call LePera

Dude, outstanding....I'll check your thread out. With regards to the rockers, I believe the 88 HD engines had the two vertical grooves you talked of. My research led me to believe it's an EVO top end...mostly because all the SS top ends had SS stamped on the cooling fins. I see you're doesn't and my top end looks pretty dead on to yours....which puts me back in wondering mode. Maybe I do have an SS top end?? SS said that was not a complete SS motor assembled by them, just shipped out as a bottom end. Now HERE's the good part: When I talked to the Ultra Cycles owner yesterday, he said when my bike was built SS couldn't keep up with their demand, so they were ordering the parts and had a guy in house assemble them. BUT he doesn't think the motor thats on mine is the one they put on it. They were putting monster motors on them....118 or something.

So who freaking knows? Does your top end have any markings? If so, where??

Yeah, it's not 100% HD...but I'm already tired of explaining to people: "No, actually it's an Ultra Frame, SS motor blah, blah, blah" I'm running with the FatBoy claim, purists be damned.

Ooo be careful, this seems to be a purist site. Guy in my other thread called my bike a bastard just now.

I have no markings on the heads either which threw me also but the builder told me it is a full S&S engine.

There was a lot of strange stuff going on around this time, particularly S&S supplying these engines to Indian for their motorcycles. I've seen pictures of Indians with the S&S logo on the heads and some without. They may have been making them both ways.

The biggest problem is we probably won't know without tearing the engines down.

What seat are you trying to find?

Yep, holes for seat mount just forward of fender strut holes.

I get the purist thing...just wish some would not act like others are pissing on their mothers grave by not caring as much. Cool is cool. The mopar site i frequent had some members who's feathers got ruffled when I put a 69 front clip on my 72 dart...and the entire world nearly quit spinning when I modified a ford 8.8 for the rear end. Seriously...we're all lucky to be alive. LOL It's a Dart everybody...it's lucky it's not continuing to rust away in the field I found it. Just say thank you and move on.

Seatwise, the Lepara that's on there is cool, but too narrow and hard. I'm trying to make this into a distance bike, as I have a triumph america for bobbing around town....and a 650 yamachop I cobbled together over a decade ago. I'm strongly considering going with a solo springer setup with a nice wide fat tractor seat.

You're right about the engine. No way I'm breaking it apart to satisfy my curiosity, unless it needs it. I'll just have to wonder. I can live with that.

I hear you on the "purists". We probably will make all kinds of friends on here for saying this but it really is up to the owner IMO.

I have a 1975 Norton 850 Commando that I've been building for some time. I want it to be a safe fun bike. I put adjustable guts in the forks, billet triple trees so I could put 1" bars and up to date switches on it because the Lucas stuff is crap. I added Brembo disc brakes front and rear and better rear shocks. The bike looks stock but it stops, rides and works like it should...but you'd think I was the devil on the Norton sites.

How does your seat mount? Mine clips under in the front and has a bolt at the top of the fender in the rear. Pretty standard mounting. Lots of seats out there like this.

Pictures or the Commando doesn't exist. The current seat only has the tab in the front with the bolt on the fender. That's it. The side mounting holes are there, but not utilized on this seat.
