Rattling noise
When I go to start sometimes there will be a rattling in the primary like the chain is jumping the sprocket. I just changed the fluid and adjusted the clutch, the clutch seemes to feel fine and it shifts fine any ideas.

Put a pointer 2 ear mechanics stethoscope on it and pin point where the noise is coming from. If it was truly rattling in the primary like the chain is jumping the sprocket, it would scare you with all the racket that would make.
Now it is possible the compensatory has come loose and the outer part is rubbing. Lot of time as the battery wears out and gets weak, it can make a banging noise. Also, with 45K, you could have some uneven chain wear which is normal. However, you have a auto adjuster. It can over tighten in that stretched area on the chain.
Was there much metal on the magnet? Did you put 50W non detergent gear oil in there? If it is just at start up and as it idles down, the engine always has an uneven idle since the pistons share the same pin and never fire exactly opposite of each other. This make the fingers which are probably a little rough now vary in noise since eack fire bumps the compensator in and out on the cup springs.. Bet that is what it is since you say it runs fine.
Mine when its hot at a light sounds like a rotary tiller in a gravel creek bed. My chain is uneven and varies almost 1/2" on the manual tensioner freeplay. My idle varies apx 50rpm up and down.

it could be if you did something incorrectly or left debris in there...

I appreciate the returned comments, I believe The Road said the compensator and thats what I'm hearing from others in the business and friends.
While i' m at it what exactly does a compensator do, I think it compensates for the kick back on start up. Am I right? or Wrong ?
J P cycles a compensator eliminator sprocket. Has anyone tried it.
I read some one bought the Screaming Eagle one and wasn't happy, thats all HD sells now for my bike, any suggestions?
