Minimum cruise control speed. Is adjustment possible?
Hi Forum,
have a Softail Slim S with cruise control. The cruise control all works fine, but I have one issue. I'm in the UK and here the usual speed limit in towns is 30 mph, however, the minimum speed that the cruise control seems to work is around 32-33 mph, which is annoying when I want to use it to ensure I stay legal. If I use the control to step down my speed in 1 mph increments, it goes out of cruise control while still above 30.
Is my cruise control out of adjustment, or are they all set to a minimum speed of around 32-33 mph? Is there any way to adjust it?
More than likely factory set...for safety and so the bike doesn't lug and die on you (some people claim that lugging harms the motor)......you might be able to change it with a tuner but I'm not sure as I've never considered this an issue.....
IMO, cruise would be the last thing you'd want to use in those kinds of situations; head on a swivel and watching for people, children, animals, cars, trucks, SUVs, communists, hippies, undead....
Might not be a bad thing that it doesn't work at that low of a speed.
You could try the dealer to see if it can be corrected. It is supposed to work at speeds from 30 mph - 90 mph. Below is from the owner's manual for your bike but you can see it also contains a typo - 90 km/h does not equal 90 mph.
NOTE
Cruise control only works at speeds between 48–90 km/h (30–90 mph) in third gear or higher
Are you sure your speedometer is accurate? Mine (14 FLHTK) seems to read about 3 mph faster than the actual speed according to road side speed / radar signs.
Something to think about. I had a car once that didn't seem to have a minimum speed and when I accidentally hit the "resume" function while using turn signal I damn near rear ended another car when mine suddenly accelerated. That could be a disaster on a bike.
I have cruise control on the CVO Breakout. It is the first time in 40 years of motorcycling that I have had it. It is bloody brilliant and once you get to grips with it, can help you keep your licence, and I concur with the necessity for low speed control, especially over this side of the pond. I got nailed and three points last year at 36mph on my 48.
I would suspect that this is just a dealer 'plug in diagnostic and tweak' adjustment but am not sure! Good luck in getting this resolved. I find cruise control invaluable even at lower speeds.
