I bought a 1999 Harley flstf fatboy that I am working on. It seems as the person that owned it made many changes and I trying to figure out what all is wrong. the latest issue to resolve is the breaks. I need to replace the brake handles that were very old and had many stress breaks in the metal. I thought that the clutch would be the hard side but found that the front brake is a mess. from everything it seems that the break switch is not what should be on a 1999 flstf? Im not sure what it comes from or even how to figure it out. this issues ie that the light was working fine until I put the correct not broken handles on now the brake light will not turn off.
Brake switch should be on the switch housing.
I don't remember now if the switch is normally closed or normally open but for some reason it sounds like your lever is not contacting it to make it operate.
Go to Ronnies HD parts microfiche and you can see the dwgs. That might help you figure it out. This should be a link right to what you need.
Your brake light switch has had the tip of the plunger broken off. Very common. Quick fix is to use a #4 3/8 stainless wood screw with a button head. When you take your switch housing apart look at the rubber boot for the switch, if you see a hole in the end the tip is broken off. Take a tiny drill bit by hand and get a the hole started then screw the screw into it. With the screw in it you can now adjust how much travel you get out of the lever before the light goes on. I set mine with about one thread showing out of the rubber, and it is perfect. The switch only completes the ground for the light when the plunger is out/ lever pulled. There are many threads on here if you search for brake light problems. I just did this to mine today and it cost .15 cents for the screw and about 15 minutes to do it.
im not sure if you guys understand? there is not a boot on this year front breaks it is a plunger I will try to add a photo
The switch is behind that plunger attached to the switch housing and is pointing 180 degrees opposite of the brake plunger you pictured.
Look at the switch housing and that picture I sent the link on and it should make sense. Follow your brake lever in and you will see where the switch is supposed to be. The lever actually fits past the brake plunger and keeps the switch closed and opens it when you operate the brake.
Take off your switch housing and you will see the switch.
