Default 07 FXSTB High Idle

After spending a couple of days surfing the forums I am still left with no answer.

2007 fxstb nightrain, power commander III, Slip-on's are Screaming Eagle.
Bought it used from dealer. I have been riding it apron 500 miles per summer form the last 3 years and up until last summer the idle has been acting up. I have no tach on it so I can only estimate the idle speed compared to my fellow bikers. it used to idle around the 1000 rpm but since last summer it is more like 2000 to 3000. I have cleaned the IAC, I have tried to reset ECM a few times and finally yesterdays after another reset ( as per a few forums where they say to turn ign switch from on to off 5 or 6 times slowly) I started the bike and idle seemed ok. Took it for a ride and after the first corner there it was again.

I had carbs in my life and know vacuum can cause problem but on FI I can't figure out from where or how I can find vacuum leak. Custom shop told me it could be the injectors?? or change the power commander. I am just scared of the price they will come up with if I bring it at the dealer. So I am turning to your help to see if I can learn and fix the damn problem.

Thank for reading

cleaning the iac maybe doing nothing and it is just shot. another thing to look at is the throttle cable could be binding and holding the throttle blade open.

Thanks for the reply. Forgot to put it in the first post, but I did check. No kinks, bindings etc. The throttle is free and works good. I took the air filter out to make sure everything operated fine.

I did notice 2 holes in the bolts that hold the filter bracket in the cylinder heads but don't know if they play any part in my problem or not. Although I replaced the bolts back before starting the bike again.

Those bolts are breathers to release pressure in the crank. You can vent them back into the intake or vent into the atmosphere. Have you tried running without your power commander? They have gone bad and cause the bike to either loose a cylinder or run poor.

Default Without Power Commander

Yup did that, without the power commander it is a bit different. The idle is a little lower although still high and I loose power in the mid rpm as if the engine was stalling.

I was thinking of investing in a new unit such as the Cobra FI2000 or Power Commander V if I can't find the problem.

Are the symptoms you're encountering limited to a high idle only? Has your bike thrown any codes? Does your bike stall when coming to a stop? Any changes in your speedometer function or self-cancelling turn signals?

Thanks for the reply btw.
The problem is only high idle. I don't remember the last time it idled normally apart from the first few month I bought it.

For the codes I will have to ask the shop since I don't have the original speedometer, but last time I brought it to the shop they did not mention any codes showing up. I heard of a code checker that is sold on amazon so I might get a hold of that for futur use.

when stopped it does not stall. It actually stays up in the 2000 to 3000 rpm, sometimes it stays around the 1200 rpm or so. As I said I have to go by the ear since I have no tach on the bike.

Turn signals work correctly for the cancelling after a turn. The flashers are after market but not the cheap chinese made stuff. Actually italien made, stuff you find on ducati i think. Speedometer is also after market, simple analog /digital but no codes on there.

I would try changing the intake gaskets since you have already ran it without the power commander with little to no change.

I had this problem and there were two faults.

One, my throttle blade shaft had cracked and broken, thus the left side was not giving proper throttle shaft information to the throttle position sensor on the left side (the cables are on the right side).

I bought a new throttle but that did not fix it properly. I tried a idle air controller but that didn't help.

The fix was a new throttle position switch. Easy to install and it's been fine ever since. I'd check for a broken throttle shaft and then try replacing the throttle position switch based on my experience.

Default Intake gasket

Thanks dibe. I did just that this week end. cost me 8$ for the 2 gaskets and a 6 hour headache since I was not in a position to remove my full fuel tank so I had to get my big fingers in tiny spaces. This said... That was not the problem. They looked fine but I changed them anyways.

So I guess my next step will be to check the injectors. Believe it or not I had them all ready to pull them out and I didn't, so I will have to start over lol.

Joe_G..
I might do that too, actually I almost bought the 37$ assembly to change it but decided to try the gaskets first. It's an easy fix if that is the problem. Will try that then will go for the injectors.

Thank you all for your help. will keep ya'll posted.
