Default Trans Oil

Hello everyone,

I know this has been beat to death, but haven't found the informaiton I'm looking for.
I have a 2003 Heritage Classic and have been running Syn 3 since it's first oil change in all three holes.
The bike has 15k miles and runs great. I have no problem with the transmission's performance but I am curious about the 75-90 shockproof fluids that a lot are running.
My questions are for anyone that has made the change from 20-50 syn3 to one of the 75-90 shockproofs.
Why did you make the change?
What difference do you feel in the transmission?
I have seen some situations where going to a thicker trans oil actually made them feel sluggish.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm not running the shockproof, but I just switched to the Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90. Really haven't noticed any huge difference. I was running Forumula + from HD. I never used the Syn 3 b/c at my 1000 mile service, the service guy at the dealer said HD no longer reccomends Syn 3 for the tranny. He didn't say why. Just switched to all Amsoil products at my 5000 mile service.

Engine Amsoil 20w50
Primary Amsoil 20w50
Tranny Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90

Nice Bike.
Thanks for the info. That's the first I've heard of a dealer stating that Syn-3 shouldn't be used in the trans. My dealer pushes the Red Line oil, but is more than happy to sell the Syn-3 as well.
I'm just nervous about putting thicker fluid in the trans when I'm happy with it as it is. Great shifting, no noise, no metal in the oil at change time.

If you are happy with Syn3 then don't change. One clue would be to look at the shavings on the mag plug with you change the oil. When I changed to Redline Shockproof, the shavings went to only a small amount of fine powder which to me equates to less wear. Just my opinion.

Hi Guys
I took delivery of my FXSTC 07 a couple of weeks ago and have been researching oil, stage 1 upgrades, exhausts, etc. This is my first Harley, so I am still learning.

About the oil - It appears the way to go is to use MCVAmsoil 20W-50 in all three places. I have cut and paste a letter by an oil dealer who sells Amsoil, and the response of the Amsoil Tech Service. The Tech's response recommends 20W-50 in all three places.

Hope this helps
best

Hi Guys, Just a quick note to point out that it is not always in the best
interests of our customers to follow all OEM leads as is the case with
Harley Davidson and Amsoil. On the big Harleys with separate
gearboxes, they are a basic gearbox, and were designed for real gear oil,
not GL1, GL1 is only just good enough for bikes that have to use the
same oil for everything. GL1 is not rated well enough for a differential in
a car, so there is no way that it is going to protect a Harley gearbox better
than a GL4 or GL5 oil. I have ridden Harleys in big groups for 20 years
and trust me, a lot of them get a very hard time. Whilst it is nice to say
MCV will go in all three holes, unlike Harley, we should have a genuine
interest in supplying our customers with the best available product so that
their gearboxes don’t wear out, which would be SVG, FGR, or the new
[left]MTG. Please change this in the Harley oil change interval and[/l
