Well I have been lurking the forums for the past couple of months since I bought my first Harley and the time has come for my 1K oil change. I took my bike in tonight (not to the Stealership...Solid Performance in Fargo) and tomorrow it is getting serviced. I am having them put Amsoil 20W-50 in the engine and the primary and Redline Shockproof in the transmission. So do these sound like good choices?
The place that is servicing my bike didn't have any Amsoil "transmission oil" and another customer at the counter stated that he uses the Amsoil 20W-50 synthetic motorcycle oil in all three holes. I know the Amsoil bottle says "engine, primary, and transmission" but does anyone in here have any experience with it in the transmission?
Dealer put their gear oil (Severe Gear) in my tranny when they did the 1k service. Made the transmission louder than with the OEM oil. Dumped it at 3k myself and put in Shockproof- much quieter & smoother shifting.
Lots of people have positive results with the Severe Gear. As they say YMMV- your mileage may vary...
I have run 10K on AMSOIL 20/50 in all 3 holes with no problems. The redline Shockproof is also a good choice. I have recently changed to AMSOIL 75/140 in the trans and it is a lot smoother, no clunk when you shift. If you have a gear whine problem it will cure that also, in most cases. As for warranty issues, as long as the Oil meets a GL1 spec. Which AMSOIL 20/50 does, you are ok. To sum it all up.. All three are good choices.
How does the warranty like the change from HD oils? Im under the impression that you HAVE to run their oils to keep your warranty valid
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act states that if a manufacturer requires you run their parts or lubricants to keep the warranty in effect, they must supply those parts or lubricants free of charge.
HD words it to where the unsuspecting (like yourself) believe they have to use HD oils & filters, and you go buy everything from them. $hitty way of doing things, IMO.
If you read the owner's manual it just says if you can't use HD oils, use an oil designed for diesel engines and it gives the API rating required. Any good dino or synthetic oil of the proper grade will do in your engine, or you can use Harley's HD 360 or Syn3.

Sounds just fine. A guy I ride with swears by Shockproof in the tranny. I use Mobil 1 75/90 because it's local and I can buy it off the shelf. My buddy orders his Redline online. I prefer a lube over an oil in the tranny...
Well I picked up my bike after work tonight and the tranny is a lot quieter...5th gear whine is not totally gone, but close. I am happy with my choices...was going to do Mobil 1 but couldn't find it anywhere.

You'll never get all the gear whine out of 5th as it's a straight cut gear. However, your tranny will love the Shockproof- especially on those hot summer days...
