Engine guards won't do much for style, but they will provide tip-over protection for you and the bike. They also provide a place to mount highway pegs, auxiliary lights, and snap-on chaps for cold weather.
I would not ride a motorcycle without engine guards AND windshield. Not only do the engine guards protect the bike's engine if the bike tips over, but also the rider. Imagine if your bike tipped over and trapped you under its weight - - - no thanks. The windshield is to keep rocks, insects, etc. from hitting me in the chest while riding. Living in Alabama, we get all sorts of beetles, bees, wasps, etc on warm days and those suckers hurt on impact.
