It gives you place to mount highway pegs and it will save your tank when you tip over ... and you will tip over sometime ... you can count on it

Well it does provide some tip over protection. I put them on mine knowing tip overs do happen to even the best of riders.

A big YES. Somewhere to put highway pegs, I have the mustache bar and can put my feet on the pegs or on top of the engine guard. On long rides this is a good thing.
My bike went down once, ok my fault I tried to do a turn on a very, very steep hill which was somebody's driveway. A slight scratch to the highway peg otherwise no other damage.

It is the next purchase for my Slim.

I was against the engine guard initially, but I put it on to protect the bike and now like the way it looks. Also holds the soft lowers through the winter which work very well when it is 50 degrees and lower. Going to order the engine guard wraps from Captain Itch. Love the crotch cooler! Made a big difference with the heat on my leg with the Rinharts and 110.

You DO want an engine guard. Ask me how I know. My story is very similar to UKLauren's. Tiny, unseeable scratches on the engine guard and absolutely protected my bike from a minor tip. Otherwise I shudder to think what would have happened.

The engine guard saved my tins in an accident...

I was stopped and a lady hit me on the right of my front fork. It knocked the bike over and flipped me on top of the bike. It was a slow speed hit, but a solid knock down...

I was OK, just a bruise. The bike had $3K in damage... mostly front fork, handlebars, windshield, driving light bracket, and even a gouge on my leather saddlebags...

Oh yeah, the engine guard had some nasty scratches, and it was bent...

I did not have one scratch on any painted surface... the front fender was fine, tank was fine, and rear fender was fine (saddle bag saved it)...

I had been thinking of removing the engine guard... So glad I left it on...!

Mine came with one on. Initially I had planned to remove it, as I never was fond of the looks of them. But the more I rode with it on, it grew on me. I like it, plus the tip over protection.
