Default starter issues

hey all, i have a 90 softail standardwith a modified EVO. I went to ride today and the starter just spun. one out of 10 times it will start, and when it does the starter stays engaged. same goes for a roll start. any idea? thanks

Kevin

I posted this in the electric tech portion but am new to the site and didn't really know which would be better.

Default RE: starter issues

Sounds like the splined shaft on the starter is dry or gummy. The drive gear sticks so hard that the solenoid can't push it into the ring gear and, when it eventually does, the return spring can't pull it back. Could also be that there are some groves worn into the shaft that the gear sticks on or the shaft and the spline in hte gear are worn so muhc that the gear ***** on the shaft and sticks. Check the solenoid plunger too, those sometimes get gunny and start sticking.
