Hello all. I have read through a bunch of previous threads and found loads of good info but hoping for a little more. I have a 1996 FXSTS that i spent the last year and a half upgrading. Where i am at now is with a 97 CI axtell big bore. Cast iron cylinders with JE forged pistons, heads milled .05" lunati voodoo cam, high lift springs, all new seals and o-rings and re used my S&S super E carb and pcv kit. I have about 130 miles on the build. I did a cold compression test on both cylinders and both are reading 160. My front cylinder is smoking as it starts to warm up at idle. It is white smoke. I am getting oil pushing out the exhaust flange on the front cylinder and oil residue blowing out the pipe. I pulled my spark plugs and the front one is oily of course and i saw oil pooled up in the exhaust valve relief. I can also hear a ticking sound coming from the rocker box that really sounds like the front. I changed my valve seals on that cylinder last night and it is still smoking after a 25 mile ride home and when my wife was behind me on the road she said it was smoking going down the road too and it stinks(obviously burning oil). After putting all this together, i dont recall seeing an umbrella valve in the rocker box when i did the work last night. I cant believe i would forget to put one in but crazier things have happened. Would a missing umbrella valve cause an excess of oil in the head leading to these symptoms or should i be looking into the possibility of a damaged piston ring? All issues are on the front cylinder. I also replaced the lifters on that cylinder due to the improper storage causing my old ones to seize. Rear cylinder is working beautifully. On another note, this was my first build and i enjoyed it and i learned a bunch and was able to buy more tools for the project. Buying tools makes me happy.

Reason: Clarification, all the issues are on the front cylinder which i replaced the lifters with oem replacements
I was thinking either bad ring (piston) or stuck exhaust valve. Hows your air goin into the carb. Check that jet yet?
Sounds like you really learned a lot.
I'd do a leak down test in that cylinder, sounds like a valve kissed a piston top to me. Ring issues would cause a number of other issues that would be very apparent right now like oil in the carb and plug fouling.
I had something similar happening. Oil from the front cylinder in the exhaust. Turns out the valve seals werent seated properly. I bought some new ones and the install tool, and fixed it right up. Just something else to look for....
I changed my valve seals last night. Still smoking. Im thinking possible bad valve guide or ring. Still have to do a leak down test though but looking for other possibilities.
