On the early balance shaft engines there were some problems with the balanceshaft adjusters. If they start to fail they sound just like a Compensator. What happen most of the time is it starts to plug up the oil supply and then it gets worse, don't ask me how I know 
. If you cannot do the work get it in for checking to someone who can, if it goes to long you can destroy the engine.
