Default Quick question

I am looking at taking the cam cover off tonight or tomorrow to inspect the tensioners. Will the oil from the oil bag drain into the engine if I open it up, or do I need drain the oil before I open up the cam cover?
The bike is a 2009 NT and I do have the service manual, but it doesn't say anything about draining the oil.

No need to drain the oil. Only a very small amount will leak out.

Seems like a quart when I take mine off, but no the tank doesn’t drain. Of course when you open the engine most change the oil and filter.

What will come out will be just enough to make a mess of the frame and wires that run along it.
If you take the cam plate and oil pump off, the tank will drain out.

Thanks for the quick replies! I already took the cover off and inspected the tensioner and have it back together! Only got maybe 1/10 of a quart, if that much. The tensioner looked for having 77k miles on it, atleast good enough to get me through another year. Attached is a pic.

Dude, you had them out, why wouldn't you go ahead and replace them? They are cheap as ****.

I would have to agree with OP.

Do you really know they were on for 77k miles?

I have seen one that looked like that at 30k.

Either way it looks like an 1/8" has been worn away.

Replace and no worries

I did think about getting some new ones when I order my gasket.
Yes I know they have 77k miles, I've had the bike since new and have yet to get them changed.
