Default Going back to points!?

Alright before you all decide I'm a jackass heres why. I ride everywhere sometimes alone sometimes in a pack but never with a chase vehicle. The most important thing for me and the direction I took with my evo was to be able to fix anything on it, on the side of the road, hence eliminating electrical fail points in leu of mechanical operations. I have done a chain conversion and many other mods with this idea in mind. So before you say I need an electronic ignition think about how I would fix that in the middle of nowhere.....then stuff your ego or opinion in a sac and keep it to yourself. For those that understand sleeping in the dirt next to your bike or tieing half your belongings to a sissy bar and disappearing for a spell then chime in. I am also converting to a kick and wanted points so I can do away with the Voes dead rev. So, let's here it who makes the best all inclusive points set up for these models and would also appreciate any guidance towards exhaust, I have run dumps, drags, slip ons to full systems with muffler not a fan of anything particular just need a good set of performance pipes that dont interfere with the kickarm. Hopefully one of you first gen Evo owners know where my heads at. Thanks in adavance for the info.

Mate there's a little Indy shop here that converts a lot of bikes to points , and he's got heaps of repeat customers,ACCELL make decent stuff (NOW) it wasn'tr always so good , the VOES thing I fixed all mine but I can't remember how I did it,getting old hey , might of filled it with silastic I just can't remember right now. The electronic ignition thing you could take a timing plate with you but you'd probably need to sort an electrical wiring pin fix
before so if you had to swap out timing plates so no soldering on the road a spare aftermarket ignition and reg/rec wouldn't hurt either. Man you're taking me back to when I was young ya bastard ha ha . I put kickers on my Shovels as those old starter relays got wet and screwed me over more than once , nothing looks better than a rat trap kicked on a classic.
The pipe thing , you'll work it out .
I'm all nostalgiad (not a word I know) out sleeping by the side of the road freezing my ***** off, or trying to fit a new condensor in the dark by moonlight , shoot man I'm all misty eyed .
Cheers mate thx for this post.

@badcooky
Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it truly grateful to take ya back a moment. Im gonna toss everything from the old syatem even the icm and just rewire it so its simple and old school, power to coil, power to points. Im stoked you said accell not the only person to lead me that route. I guess I'm just an odd ball never been much for the new fandangled stuff I like my carbs and my points. Something to be said about kicking a bike and breathing life into it. As far as the Voes dead rev should only matter if the ICM is still in use after I convert to points and mechanical advance she should bust off first lick, assuming I set them sober haha. Thanks again

Remember the points gap is always half or double the plug gap I can't remember which one,one will run one might not , you'll work it out,yea I nearly always had a screaming Eagle ignition with the VOES so i fixed the VOES on my old bikes.
Yea i used to ride over the full/fullish moon at night so I could see the road and furry animals better .
I'm now thinking after my back op I might just go tour at night again but summer only as I'm old.
Onya champ keep us posted.

You might want to post in the Evo section

Have you thought about going to a magneto? One of our esteemed Evo Brothers has an interesting project going on in the Evo section with an older Sportster he is building. He installed a magneto on it and went with a minimalist electrical system.

FWIW, the ignition modules in Evo's tend to be pretty reliable. The common part to fail in the ignition system is the pickup, usually evidenced by goo.

My mate 'rolled back' to carburettor ditching everything ECM canbus based on his 48. Total cost was £2500 over here carried out by a competent Indy to include dyno time to get the set up right. If you want specific details of what parts were used and where he got them from I can 'sound him out' I believe most of the parts came from 'Your Side of the Pond' anyway? Best picture I can provide of his 48 below.

Hey thanks fellas I guess I will move my post to the evo section guess Drag specialties was right this year by putting the evos in the old book, @k9f I appreciate it but I'm not gonna ask you to shell out a bom on your buddies 48 but I'm grateful for the offer.

@badcooky yessir got a matchbook in my toolkit!!

@prot, oh I completely agree but I dont know many stores or shops that keep halifex gens on hand but I do know napa carries the points as they ran on old four wheel cages.

Why not do a whole engine swap to an older model, with kickstarter, 4 gears and mechanical everything?

@prot, I would love to run a mag just dont have the loot to shell out for a Morris or Hunt. Definitely future goals. Maybe chopper gods will put me on the path to one somewhere down the road. Thanks again for the info.
