When I was looking for a used bike, I used Auto Check....
I forget the price, but I bought a certain number of VIN checks over like 3 months. It allowed me to check out several bikes, before contacting the owners.
I got reports that showed no reported damage, etc, etc. It also gave a registration history of the bike.
As with any of these services, they are only as good as the info they can collect. It is possible for someone to mess up a bike and not have any work reported anywhere... but probably not in the majority of cases.
I have used vinaudit.com twice each check is $9.99. Not sure how reputable it is but in both cases everything checked out clean and it shows every title transfer (just the state, date, and mileage at time of trasfer, though).
I have a bike for sale on craiglist, one potential buyer tried to convince me to pay for a report to be ran through bikevinusa.com, but the whole interaction felt like a scam so I assumed that website is one too. I didn't really research it much just because I wasnt comfortable so I decided to take a pass, but who knows. Could have been a legit thing.
After a little research I went with CycleVin.com. $25 and I found a $5 off coupon. I found out what I needed to know. After trying to register my 1999 Softail I was told it had a salvage/rebuilt title. I was pissed... The bike was salvaged and then rebuilt in 2003. However, the bike has low miles, new custom & high performance forks and front brakes. and a wide rear tire kit. Plus the engine looks great and sounds obnoxious. My only worry is the frame.
