Nothing Better To Do
So, I turned my bike and headed South. I had not as of yet been to the Keys and the weather was outstanding, so, I packed a small over night bag , jumped on my bike and headed South. I ended up taking the Turnpike South to the end and hung a left (Rt.1 South). Once leaving the Turnpike I was more able to enjoy the scenery. While Rt.1 is a "local" road, it only slows down when hitting the center of a few of the islands. Key Largo came up fast and I scratched my head thinking that this wasn't going to be a big deal! Three and a half hours later I found myself on Duval Street passing by Hemmingway's house looking for a place to park, get off the bike and walk around for a bit.
I found a nice little outdoor bar and grill just outside of Mallory Square and sat down for an ice cold beer and Cuban sandwich. After a brief conversation with the bartender I decided that I would finish the ride, 1.1 miles to the southernmost tip, and then head a short ways North just to clear the town and get a cheaper hotel room. I jumped on my bike and headed over to Duvall Street and looked to the left (South) to see a sea of people walking in the street, shoulder to shoulder. I had no wishes to battle the crowd so I turned North and headed back up.
The long and short of it was that I was back home (West Palm Beach) by 8:30 that night. I gotta say that coming off of 9 years on a Road King and onto my Heritage I didn't know what to expect comfort wise? 9 hours or so of riding time and 460 miles were a breeze! This bike fits me like a glove. The only mods I've made to it have been the Captain Itch Crotch Cooler and cup holder! Both items indispensable in the South of Florida!!
